A team of three second-year female students studying for Bachelor of Science in Computer Science , dubbed team ‘WABUNI’, has won the Safaricom Technovation Challenge. In a ceremony held at the Safaricom Michael Joseph Center on 28th may 2014 and covered by both the Standard and Nation Media Group, the team won desktops and a trophy for the university, a tablet for each team member, and were also awarded certificates. Team Wabuni that was made up of Caroline Kimathi, Nancy Lucy Okoth, and Pauline Gataka developed an app named ‘quit mosquito’. The app, an innovative mosquito repellent, uses ultrasonic sound frequencies to cause stress to mosquitoes thereby forcing the insects to flee. To ensure the comfort of humans, it incorporates an inbuilt music player for entertainment and to reduce irritation at low frequencies The all-female team of students, with Caroline Kimathi as team leader, were mentored by Ms. Agnes Mindila, a lecturer at the Department of Computing and Ms. Martha Githui, a project manager at Safaricom. By virtue of the win, the contestants are expected to enter their app in the world-wide technovation challenge hat is open to female candidates of 23 years and less. The ‘quit mosquito’ app will also be uploaded and available on the Safaricom app store.
