Information Technology
The JKUAT IT Department started its academic operations as JKUAT-MMS IT centre in March 1996 as a partnership between Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and MMS Nebraska USA.
The centre was fully integrated into the university in the year 2004 and renamed JKUAT IT Centre. This was later merged with the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology (ICSIT) in May 2009 to form two departments under the Institute i.e. Information Technology (IT) and Computing.
JKUAT IT Department was started in response to both national and international demand for computer training. The Department certifies that its students gain a wide enough knowledge and understanding of the subjects studied to perform proficiently in a computerized office environment and industry. This venture is modeled after the Cambridge Modular approach and syllabus that has a practical, skills-based and flexibility, making it ideal for individual and business staff development and training schemes.
Computing Department
The JKUAT Computing Department, in its present form, formally started as the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology (ICSIT) in 1998 when it admitted the first batch of B.Sc. Computer Science students. ICSIT was itself an offshoot of the Department of Mathematics that previously offered service teaching in computing related courses to all other university departments. ICSIT finally merged with JKUAT IT Centre in 2009, with the former ICSIT becoming Department of Computing, and the former IT Centre becoming IT Department. The Department of Computing currently offers a number of undergraduate courses in Computer Science and Computer Technology and post-graduate courses in Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Information Systems, Computer Science, and Information Technology. The Department of Computing continues to offer training that aims to help the country realize development visions. Our graduates are equipped with skills that enable them to work and engage in scholarship anywhere in the world. Our students are exposed to practical-based training in a conducive environment that enables them to innovate, self-learn, and interact with faculty and peers.
