The Clean Air Catalyst is a global partnership working in low-and middle-income countries to accelerate locally tailored, self-reliant solutions to air pollution led by World Resources Institute and Environmental Defense Fund. The project is funded by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Nairobi project was launched in June 2022 to establish a public and private sector coalition to support clean air solutions and to scale up an integrated climate and air quality management plan for the city. The Nairobi project established Nairobi Air Quality Working Group-(N-AIR) which has five sub-committees: Research and Data, Health, Community Engagement, Policy and Regulation and Sectors.  Dr. Paul Njogu, from IEET represents JKUAT in the Nairobi Air Quality Working group as the Chair of Research and Data sub-committee. JKUAT will chair the group for a period of three (3) years. Other universities include Kenyatta University and University of Nairobi.

The Clean Air Catalyst brings stakeholders from different sectors, including; the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Nairobi City County Government (NCCG), Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), Environmental Compliance Institute (ECI), University of Nairobi (UON), Kenyatta University (KU), JKUAT and GROOTS Kenya among others all in an effort to fight Air pollution.

The project is assessing emissions from various sectors including; open waste burning, transport, construction, eateries and restaurants and emissions from households. A total of five postgraduate students from JKUAT are attached to the project.
