IWelcome to the Environment Department, we offer a market-oriented Master of Science in Environmental Legislation and Management (MSc. ELM). This is in response to the global changes experienced in our environment thus need to support sustainable development goal and to design projects with the Environment in mind; Design for the Environment. Environmental conditions have continued to deteriorate globally due to failures in development and in-use technologies in agricultural, energy and manufacturing processes to assure sustainability. Moreover, the environment has been modified; primarily due to population growth and human activities. According to the Kenya Constitution 2010 and Environmental Management and Coordination Act, 1999
(2015 amended), every Kenyans is entitled to a safe and clean environment. Attainment of this right require concerted efforts from various stakeholders. JKUAT through the Institute has aligned her programs to position herself toward supporting this course. A multidisciplinary approach integrating climate science, analytical chemistry, engineering, environmental modelling, circular economy, circular economy, resettlement action plans and life cycle management is required to address the challenges facing environmental wellbeing. The enactment of new regulations such as; EMCA (Extended Producer Responsibility) Regulations, 2020, Air Quality Regulations, 2024, Waste Regulations, 2024 and many others call for continuous review of the curriculum. In response to the changing legislation and policy space the courses are reviewed regularly to keep to pace with the changing laws and policies.
The institute operates some of the most modern facilities in recycling such as the Polyethylene Phthalate Bottle recycling plant. Together with local and international partners the institute has been developing capacity in air quality monitoring with its Prescence felt in the Nairobi City County Clean Air Catalyst and the Breathe Cities projects plus other conservation projects like the Thika catchment rehabilitation. These and many others are used as training grounds for our students to acquire hands on experience.
The Institute boasts of a big pool of graduands of this curse who hold very senior positions in Government agencies, UNEP, NGOs,
NEMA and Academia just to name a few.

Master of Environmental Legislation and Management (MSc. ELM) course is developed for graduates and professionals in Environmental Science, Environmental Conservation, Law, Environmental Planning and Management, Environmental studies, Forestry, Geography, Agricultural or Applied Biological/Physical sciences, Engineering and work with National and County governments, NGOs, and other relevant professionals and consulting firms. The course will enable students make evidence-based decision making in the selection and application of environmental solutions for sustainable future.
Eligibility
The following shall be eligible for registration for the Master of Environmental Legislation and Management (MSc. ELM). A holder of:
- A Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class (Upper Division) in Environmental Science, Environmental Conservation,
Law, Environmental Law, Environmental Planning and Management, Environmental studies, Forestry, Geography, Agricultural or Applied Biological/Physical sciences, Engineering from JKUAT, or any other university recognized by the JKUAT Senate. - A Bachelor’s degree with Second Class (Lower Division), with minimum working experience of 1 year in a related field/or
experience in terms of publication in a relevant field. - Any other equivalent qualification recognised by the JKUAT Senate
The Master of Science in Environmental Legislation and Management course is a 2-year course on full time and 4-years on part time
basis. This encompasses Coursework; Eleven taught units during the first year and a thesis plus at least one publication in refereed
journal.
Course Work
The course includes both coursework and research. During the first year, students take 11 eleven units as presented in the Table below;

Year II: Research Leading to Thesis and ONE Publication
In the second year of study, students choose a topic of interest and with the help of academic supervisors develop a proposal which leads to a thesis is a specialised area. The students are expected to participate in academic conferences and workshops. They are also expected to publish at least on Research Article in a Scopus Indexed Journal with a high impact factor.
Application forms are available online and can also be obtained from the JKUAT Graduate School at a fee of KSh. 1,500. Applications are received throughout the year and the main intake happens in September every year.
Funding Opportunities
Funding and Scholarship opportunities will be communicated from time to time. Students in the final year of study are encouraged to approach their supervisors for such opportunities.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the programme will be expected to play a leading role as experts and managers in environmental management, monitoring, and informed decision making for environmental management in national, regional and international organizations. The graduates could also work in academia as researchers/lecturers and in consultancy firms as experts or on self-employment.
