In recent years, the tech industry has witnessed a growing wave of women stepping into STEM careers, breaking barriers in fields traditionally dominated by men. This transformation has sparked a movement to encourage young girls to explore technology and create spaces for them to thrive.
One similar initiative was rolled out at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), November 14, 2024, where the SHETECH Club joined forces with Huawei’s Women in Tech (WITH) team to host a career talk for visionary young women in technology, aspiring to step into STEM careers.
The initiative was aimed at fostering a space for empowerment, mentorship, and the exchange of ideas between like-minded women.
The SHETECH club, originally founded as the SHE Club, was established as a stepping stone for women in fields traditionally underrepresented by women.
The event, themed, “Empowering Women Leaders Through Access to New Career Paths, Growth Opportunities, and Contributions to Tech Innovations to Drive Innovation and Social Impact,” aimed to inspire and equip female students with tools to excel in tech.
Dr. Agnes Mindila, the Director of SCIT, shared an inspiring message with the attendees, urging them to remain focused and dedicated in their pursuit of their goals.
“If you want something badly enough, you can attain it. You need to put in the effort and focus on what your heart desires,” she said. Once you identify opportunities, you simply need to show up and work towards making a difference,” Dr. Mindila stated.
Dr. Francis Thiong’o, Chair of the Department of Information and Technology, expressed his steadfast support of women’s empowerment.
“Today’s mission is not just a discussion it is a call to action. Spread the word about SHETECH, so its impact grows far and wide. Engage actively, listen intently, and don’t shy away from asking questions take home the answers you need to move forward,” said Mr. Thiong’o.
The highlight of the day was an address by the Chief Guest, Eng. Maureen Mwaniki, Director of Huawei Women in Tech, who emphasized the importance of self-worth and personal branding.
“You are a brand on your own and success doesn’t happen in isolation. Ensure you find yourselves mentors to guide you through your respective careers. Treat failures as stepping stones to growth, and remember that gaining knowledge requires both dedication and time. In every space you enter, strive to stand out by cultivating something uniquely yours,” Eng. Mwaniki.
Eng. Mwaniki also encouraged students to align their career decisions with their goals and remain open-minded to diverse opportunities outside their career spectrum. She also encouraged students to infuse fun into their academic lives.
“Set clear, achievable goals and develop strategies to support them. Surround yourself with people who motivate and encourage you,” said Eng. Mwaniki.
Other speakers emphasised proactivity, networking and open mindedness to new ideas and urged students to grab opportunities when they arise.
