Delegates pick their ballot papers in readiness to vote

Delegates drawn from 70 departments consisting of 198 students casted their votes to elect the new Jomo Kenyatta University Students Association (JKUSA) student council at JKUAT main campus on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 as students waited patiently for their new leaders.

The new council members who will be in office for one year in accordance with the University (Amendment) Act 2016 will be governed by a student’s council chairperson and vice-chairperson of opposite gender ,  secretary general,  finance secretary, academic affairs secretary, sports and entertainment secretary and health, catering & accommodation secretary.

The Chairman elect, Ibrahim Boru,  who ran unoppossed will take over from outgoing chairman Asman Omondi  and will be deputised by Melissa Nasuba from JKUAT Karen Campus.

Alexander Okochi won the hugely contested secretary general position by 110 votes followed by Gideon Kiptoo 41 votes, Samwel Onyango 39 votes and Josephat Mulandi 16 votes.

The Finance secretary position was a two horse race with Zadock Rono emerging victorious with 168 votes and Nyangoto Steve fetching 31 votes.

Hesbon Aboki who garnered 119 votes emerged tops capturing the post of academic affairs secretary with 119 votes beating Narboth Onyango and Huxley Magak who had 46 and 32 respectively.

The new Sports and Entertainment Secretary is Mr. Byron Makotswe who sailed with 123 votes defeating Mr.Rowland Odhiambo his only competitor who bagged 77 votes.

The position of health catering and accommodation secretary was unopposed and will be held by Wahome Clare Wanjiku.

The new JKUSA team comprising of 26 Schools and Halls representatives will be sworn in on a date to be confirmed later, followed by a one week leadership training programme.
