University Management Commends JKUAT Students’ Excellence – Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

The University Management Board (UMB) has commended Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) students for their outstanding performance in this year’s sporting competitions.

The Board noted that the achievements not only showcased the students’ individual talent and commitment but also reflected the University’s dedication to holistic education that integrates academics, sports, and extracurricular excellence.

Led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Ngumi, the Board celebrated the athletes and teams for flying the JKUAT flag high in national competitions.

Jubilant JKUAT students celebrate their victory at the 14th edition of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Women’s Championship held earlier this year.

At the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) Women’s Championships, JKUAT secured third place overall, while in the men’s category, JKUAT clinched top positions in Chess, Badminton, and Karate while also producing the best chess player of the championships.

In addition, JKUAT rugby team emerged victorious at the Rugby Mwamba Cup, while at the KUSF North Conference, JKUAT dominated in multiple disciplines, including men’s and women’s Karate, men’s Scrabble, and women’s Basketball, among others.

Speaking during the UMB meeting on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the Vice Chancellor lauded the victories as a testament to JKUAT’s growing sporting culture and urged students to remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence beyond the lecture halls.

“As management, we are keen to ensure we produce well-rounded graduates who excel not only in academics but also in sports, innovation, leadership, and community service. These achievements demonstrate that JKUAT students have the potential to compete and thrive at both national and international levels. We will continue to invest in structures and opportunities that nurture this talents,” said Prof. Ngumi.

Director of Sports, Dr. Waweru Kamaku, congratulated the students for their discipline, teamwork and resilience.

He emphasized that JKUAT’s recognition as the home of the best chess player in the championships, alongside its dominance in the KUSF North Conference, highlights the University’s commitment to produce top talent.

Beyond sporting, the meeting also celebrated JKUAT’s progress in advancing inclusivity and equality. The Director of the Gender and Mentoring Centre, Dr. Moses Gichua, presented two prestigious awards conferred to the University earlier this year by the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) during the USAWA Awards ceremony.

These included the “Attainment of Gender Parity in the University Council 2024” and “Excellent Performance for Consistency in Gender and Social Inclusion.”
