JKUAT Students Participate in PRSK Mentorship and Registration Forum

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) hosted a Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) Students’ Mentorship and Registration Forum at its Main Campus in Juja.

The event, held on May 14, 2026, brought together students from the Department of Media Technology and Applied Communication (MTAC), industry practitioners, and PRSK representatives for mentorship, professional development, and registration into the professional body.

The students had the opportunity to interact with seasoned public relations practitioners, gain insights into the profession, explore emerging trends in strategic communication, and learn about the importance of professional accreditation and networking in advancing their careers.

Speaking during the event, the Principal of the College of Human Resource Development (COHRED), Prof. Florence Mwaura, thanked PRSK for its continued support over the years and commended the students for contributing to the success of the forum.

Prof. Mwaura noted that today’s job market is highly competitive and demands skills, confidence, professionalism, and adaptability. She urged students to prepare themselves early by acquiring practical experience, strengthening their communication skills, and embracing opportunities for professional growth.

“Market preparedness means building personal discipline, teamwork, and a positive attitude. Employers are not only looking for certificates but also individuals who can communicate effectively, solve problems, and work professionally,” said Prof. Mwaura.

The keynote speaker, PRSK Marketing Officer Mr. Joseph Ndegwa, emphasized the importance of professional networking and continuous learning in building a successful career in public relations and strategic communication.

He encouraged students to take advantage of mentorship opportunities and actively engage with professional bodies to enhance their skills and industry exposure.

“As you go out for your attachments and internships remember that professionalism is very important. Keep time, dress appropriately, communicate and be respectful. Maintain discipline in every environment you will work more so this attachment and internship programmes”, noted Ndegwa.

During the question-and-answer session, students engaged the speakers on a range of issues affecting their academic and professional development, including career opportunities, professional certification, and emerging trends in the communication industry.

Moses Rinka, a fourth-year Mass Communication student, lauded the forum for providing valuable insights into the public relations profession and the importance of professional accreditation. He noted that registration with PRSK would enhance students’ professional credibility, expand their networks, and provide access to opportunities that could support their career growth.

The forum concluded with a student registration exercise, during which PRSK registered more than 400 students, providing them with an opportunity to join the professional body and access mentorship, networking, and career development opportunities.
