Strengthening Inter-Departmental Relations

Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi addresses the Heads of Departments

In an effort to foster collaboration and shared leadership, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology organized a two-day training for Heads of Departments, March 13-14, 2023.

The training provided a platform to deliberate on various issues facing the University at the departmental level as well as accentuating the importance of a harmonious working relationship of different departmental heads in steering JKUAT to greater heights.

During the training, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi emphasized the importance of efficient and effective provision of University services and delivery of quality education. She also urged the Departmental Heads to implement mentorship programs to nurture young talent and ensure a consistent supply of competent staff.

Prof. Ngumi commended the JKUAT community for their efforts in making the University a preferred education hub in the region. She called on the Departmental Heads to lead by example in realizing the vision and mission of the University, contributing to the social and economic development of the country.

“It is no secret that JKUAT is the most preferred institution in the region. This has been evident by the visits to some of the leading organisations such as Kenya Ports Authority, Safaricom, among others, where their top leadership are products of JKUAT. However, our real task is staying on top of the pile,” said the Vice Chancellor.

Prof. Ngumi encouraged the academic heads of departments to rally their researchers and academic staff to proactively engage in research that could be harnessed to power Kenya’s economic transformation thus realising the government’s development agenda.

“For us to be a research, innovation and entrepreneurial University, ensure that your academic staff carry out impactful and meaningful research for the betterment of society. Liaise with the relevant departments, divisions and government agencies to ensure that research outputs reach the community,” advised Prof. Ngumi.

The training was also addressed by the Deputy Vice Chancellors; Prof. Bernard Ikua, Prof. Robert Kinyua and Prof. Jackson Kwanza.

Prof. Bernard Ikua, whose division, Administration and Finance, organized the training, said it was a significant step towards creating a shared leadership approach at JKUAT, and “as a university, we look forward to the positive impact it will have on the Institution’s growth and development.
