Sports can Unite Kenyans, Foster Peace, says Eliud Kipchoge

“Sports can unite Kenyans, and a United Kenya is a Peaceful Kenya,” two times World’s great Marathoner Eliud Kipchoge has said.

He was speaking during a tree planning visit at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), where he is set to be conferred with an honorary degree in its forthcoming graduation ceremony.

Kipchoge noted that JKUAT has inspired him to do a lot more in the society and on a personal level.  He encouraged the JKUAT fraternity on its ongoing research as he noted its contribution in Agricultural Research.

Speaking during the ceremony, JKUAT Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, added that the University is delighted to confer him with the degree due to his exemplary contributions to the society e.g. in building libraries, and sponsoring students in his foundation, as well as his passion in conservation by planting trees in different parts of the country.

Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, highlighted that the award is a tribute to Kipchoge’s unwavering dedication to societal welfare, setting an exemplary standard that transcends the world of sports. His profound impact reaches far beyond athletic achievements, resonating deeply within communities and inspiring positive change.

“As an institution dedicated to recognizing excellence and societal impact, JKUAT takes immense pride in honoring Eliud Kipchoge. His relentless pursuit of excellence, both on and off the track, exemplifies the values we hold dear. Through this honorary degree, we celebrate his exceptional contributions, hoping to inspire our students to emulate his dedication to humanity,” said Prof. Ngumi.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology will confer an honorary degree upon Mr. Eliud Kipchoge, acclaimed as the world’s greatest marathoner. The decision was unanimously endorsed by the Honorary Degrees Committee, University Senate, and Council, recognizing Kipchoge’s unparalleled achievements and contributions to society.

The prestigious Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) will be, a testament to Kipchoge’s exceptional humanitarian efforts and philanthropic endeavors.

The official conferment ceremony is set to take place during the 41st JKUAT Graduation Ceremony on December 1st   2023, commencing at 8:00 a.m. at the Graduation Square, Juja Main Campus.

Mr. Eliud Kipchoge’s remarkable accomplishments extend beyond his unparalleled success in the sporting arena. His dedication to philanthropy and humanitarian causes through his foundation, has made a tangible difference in the lives of many.

Mr. Kipchoge views the honorary degree as a symbol that every effort toward positive change, no matter how modest, carries significant weight in creating a larger impact.
