SoMMME Marks Annual Sports Day

On your marks, get ready, go!

The School of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Material Engineering (SoMMME) held their annual sports day, Friday, October 14, 2022. The one-day event that brought together about 600 staff and students was organized to strengthen the relationship between students and staff by engaging them in fun activities.

According to the Dean SOMMME, Dr. Onesmus Muvengei, in addition to physical activities the sports day also and incorporates cognitive engagement to enhance team work among colleagues and the students they serve.

“The event goes beyond physical exercise. It provides a platform to also teach us about life; from teamwork, getting along with others, to working together to achieve a common goal,” said Dr. Muvengei.

The sports day saw staff and students show their abilities in various activities including 100 meter race, 800 meter race, tug of war, cycling and plank race among other activities.

In the men category (100 meter race) Benjamin Ruger from the Department of Mining, Materials and Petroleum Engineering emerged the winner while Chacha Merceline from the Department of Marine Engineering clinched the 100 meter women race emerged the top.

The Department of Mechatronics Engineering showed their sports prowess in most of the activities emerging winners in the overall competition while the Department of Mechanical Engineering came second.

The Sports Day was also graced by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration and Finance, Prof. Bernard Ikua, Principal, College of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Eng. Hiram Ndiritu and Registrar, Administration and Finance, Dr. Rose Githu among other University officials.
