The School of Bio-Systems and Environmental Engineering (SOBEE) in the College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC) held a lively and interactive farewell luncheon to honor its final-year students.
The event, held on Wednesday, June 10, marked a significant milestone as it brought together students, technical staff, faculty members, and school leadership to reflect on the students’ academic journey and celebrate the promising futures that lie ahead.
Far from being a somber farewell, the afternoon was filled with vibrant interactions, camaraderie, and engaging icebreakers. Students and staff enthusiastically participated in various activities, including a career-guessing game and a competitive numerical challenge, which set a joyful tone for the luncheon while providing an opportunity for participants to share their diverse professional aspirations.
The event also symbolized the students’ transition from academia to industry and highlighted the institutional support provided by both teaching and technical personnel throughout their academic journey.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating cohort, Ms. Shaline Sakong, class representative of the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABED) programme, expressed profound gratitude to the faculty for their dedication to mentoring and preparing students for the job market.
“To our lecturers, we thank you for your constant support in preparing us for the outside world. It’s been a lifetime of memories we have created together,” said Ms. Sakong, who is pursuing a degree in Energy and Environment.
Her sentiments were echoed by Mr. Chris Aswani, another ABED class representative, who reflected on the lasting impact of trainers such as Dr. Erick Ronoh on the students’ academic and professional development.
Mr. Aswani expressed confidence that the graduating class was well equipped to undertake national projects and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development. He also reminded his peers that agricultural engineering remains a cornerstone of the nation’s economy.
The ABED Chairperson, Dr. Kipchumba Cherono, noted that the faculty had prepared the students well enough and congratulated them on successfully completing their studies. He further encouraged them to pursue postgraduate education and continue advancing their professional and academic aspirations.
The Chairperson of the Soil, Water and Environmental Engineering Department (SWEED), Dr. Hosea Mwangi, assured the graduands that the department’s doors would always remain open. He emphasized the department’s commitment to supporting their career growth through recommendation letters, professional mentorship, and access to employment opportunities and professional networks.
The luncheon concluded on a high note, with students, faculty, and staff sharing reflections, exchanging well wishes, and celebrating the achievements of the graduating class. As the future engineers prepare to embark on the next chapter of their professional journeys, the event served as a fitting tribute to their hard work, resilience, and accomplishments during their time at SOBEE.
