The Faculty of Architecture and Building Sciences (SABS) is part of the academic units at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), that is involved in education, research and community services in the field of built environment. This is the second oldest school of architecture in Kenya and was established first as a department of architecture in 1990 and as a school in 2000. The School brings together disciplines related to the built environment with the aim of training, conducting research and innovation. The faculty focusses its contribution in the provision of qualified human resources and science in the development of this field.
Staff members are actively engaged in research either in a supervisory capacity at undergraduate and postgraduate levels or as research partners in sponsored research projects funded through National Research Fund (NRF), international bodies or industries. Additionally, staff are actively involved in consultancy assignments undertaken for individuals, institutions, county and national government. Some members also serve as assessors for Commission for University Education (CUE) and professional bodies like Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS), Institute of Engineers of Kenya, (IEK), Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya (IQSK), among others.
The school has vibrant postgraduate programmes and all departments offer both Masters and Doctoral programmes. Our Centre for Urban Studies is at the forefront of Training, Research, and Innovation with its knowledge being developed in close cooperation between practitioners and researchers, both in the University and at the UN-Habitat. We have qualified and experienced academic and non-academic staff in all areas of our specializations, who are committed to develop a robust alumnus suited to the demands of the country and the region at large. The faculty and staff are dedicated and supportive to address research within the University and create a research environment that links the spheres of science, technology, and innovation to the built environment. Our graduates are very well received by the industry which by itself motivates faculty.
SABS offers an exciting setting for interaction and exchange of ideas through combination of various disciplines. Working in collaboration with colleagues in other schools at the University, we see it as our responsibility to define the necessary framework for an intense yet engaging advancement of transdisciplinary research. Our programmes have a social dimension aimed at the construction of alternative and sustainable futures. The complexities of contemporary global and environmental issues including rapid urbanization, scarcity of resources, and disasters. Economic disparities between the rich and poor require solutions that are both imaginative and innovative. Our research by staff and students aim at addressing these social challenges in a sustainable manner.
All programmes mounted through the faculty have been accredited. Locally, all programmes are accredited by CUE. At international level, Architecture is accredited by Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) and Landscape Architecture by International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA).
SABS welcomes you to engage with us in any of our diverse disciplines and in seminars, workshops and conferences and share with us our commitment to service as outlined in the University service charter.
