Chair of the Department

Welcome to the Department of Marine Engineering and Maritime Operations (MEMO), in the School of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Materials Engineering (SOMMME) that is under the College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC). The department was established in September 2014 from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Dr. Jotham Muthoka Munyalo (BSc., MSc., PhD)

We offer a comprehensive five-year program, Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, and a four-year program, Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science, designed to produce competent maritime professionals for both shipboard and shore-based careers. The Marine Engineering programme is accredited by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and structured to meet the minimum requirements of the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) for students to be certified as officers in charge of engineering watch (EOOW), while the Nautical Science programme is aligned with international maritime standards to prepare students for certification as deck officers, officers in charge of a navigational watch (OOW).

Our academic staff comprises highly trained and qualified lecturers, many of whom have undergone advanced training and professional exposure internationally. This global perspective enhances the quality of instruction and ensures that students are equipped with up-to-date knowledge and industry-relevant skills. Teaching is complemented by practical training through simulators, laboratory experiments, workshops, research methodology, proposal development, and final-year design and project work, which often involve real-world problem-solving, design, and fabrication.

The department is committed not only to academic excellence but also to the holistic development of its students. We aim to nurture professionals who are innovative, ethical, resilient, and capable of addressing the complex challenges of the maritime industry. Through continuous improvement of our programmes and facilities, we strive to remain at the forefront of maritime education and training. History

The Department of Marine Engineering and Maritime Operations began in 2010 under the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The department is under the School of Mechanical, Manufacturing, and Materials Engineering in the College of Engineering and Technology. The department currently runs a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science, with future prospects of adding undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

To be a department recognised as a hub of excellence in marine training and research to affect the marine industry in the country and in the world.

Vision

To serve the global maritime industry by producing leaders in training and innovation in the maritime field.
