Message from the Chair
Welcome to the department of Soil, Water and Environmental Engineering (SWEED). In line with the mission of the University, we offer quality training, research, consultancy and community services in the broader areas of water resources management and environmental management. We have experts in wide range of areas including: Hydrology, Irrigation and drainage, watershed management, integrated water resources management (IWRM), climate change, sustainable land management, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), soil and water conservation, modelling of environmental systems, environmental impact assessment, water pollution management, water and wastewater treatment, aquaculture technology. Our Professors and lecturers are highly experienced and are renown experts in their fields of specialization. They do cutting edge research which is published in high impact peer reviewed journals. They are also actively involved in community development and consultancy projects where they use their knowledge and experience to develop solutions to challenges facing the society today. At the department we have developed market-driven and highly competitive degree programs. The programs have been developed in consultation with various stakeholders including the potential employers. Graduates from our programs are highly sought and many of them are working in various organizations including the national government, county governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), private companies, research institutions and universities. Many of them are also running their companies and are providing solutions to the many water and environmental challenges facing the society today. In 2022, two new programs were launched that would go a long way in producing experts with skills to accelerate the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 6) i.e. Ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for all. The two programs are Master of Science in Sanitation and Bachelor of Science in Water and Environmental Engineering. So, you are welcome to join us as a bachelor or a postgraduate student. You are also welcome to partner with our highly competitive staff for research and other projects. Dr. Hosea Mwangi (PhD)
The Soil, Water and Environmental Engineering Department (SWEED) is one of the departments in the School of Biosystem and Environmental Engineering (SoBEE) under the College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC). Since its inception, the Department has continued to improve its programmes in trend with market demands.
The mission of SWEED is training, research, innovation and provision of professional services and extension in the following focal areas:
- Irrigation and Drainage Management
- Sustainable Land Management.
- Clean energy Resources Development.
- Environmental Engineering.
- Aquaculture Technology.
- Climate Risk Management for Water, Agriculture and Environment.
The Department has continued to produce leaders in the fields of agriculture and engineering.
Apart from a team of highly qualified teaching and technical staff, the department has fully equipped laboratories, and modern facilities for research teaching and practical training of students. This includes a tuition farm, agricultural engineering workshop and computer laboratories. Training is highly practical oriented. Students are trained through lectures, practical tutorials and seminars giving them a solid theoretical background and strong practical approach.
The department produces specialized engineers combining environmental, biological and technical skills to harness natural resources for development while paying attention to environmental stability. It is the leading department in specialized training, research and innovation. Students from the department have a good insight into the most challenging problems on the boundaries between their disciplines and participate in multidisciplinary research in several level departments.
The department also collaborates with various renown local and international institutions to undertake joint research projects and capacity building programmes. Currently, the department is involved in various research projects on current issues such as climate change, food security, protected cultivation, integrated water resources management, sustainable production and energy.

PhD in Soil and Water Engineering:
The aim of this programme is to produce qualified researchers, innovators, educators and consultants in
the specialized fields of Soil and Water Engineering. This is achieved through the accomplishment of
independent and original research work, the reporting of the research results in a thesis and a
subsequent oral defence. This course is research based and is expected to take 36 months.
Entry requirement for PhD in Soil and Water Engineering
Candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy in Soil and Water Engineering should have a minimum of:
1. A holder of a Master of Science degree in Soil and Water Engineering of JKUAT.
2. A holder of a Master of Science degree in Soil and Water Engineering or any other related field from
any other institution, which is recognized by JKUAT as being of equivalent academic status.
3. In addition, a candidate must submit a research proposal (concept during application and full proposal
to follow) approved by the School postgraduate board to be eligible for admission.

MSc in Soil and Water Engineering:
The Master of Science in Soil and Water Engineering (MSc SWE) aims at developing skills and capacity in
planning, application, and management of technology for utilization and preservation of soil and water
resources. The course is structured into one-year coursework and a subsequent year for research and
thesis writing. Note that MSc candidate is required to publish at list one paper in peer review journal.
Entry requirement for MSc Soil and Water Engineering
Candidates for the Master of Science in Soil and Water Engineering should have a minimum of:
1. A Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in Soil, Water and Environmental Engineering;
Agricultural Engineering; Civil Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and
Technology (JKUAT), or
2. A Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree as in a) with relevant research experience as
evidenced by publications, or
3. An equivalent degree recognized by the University Senate. NB: if your degree is not listed but similar,
apply for admission and you will be advised accordingly.

Research & Development in Africa Seminar
On 1st July 2026, the School of Biosystems and Environmental Engineering (SoBEE) hosted an engaging academic seminar on “Research & Development in Africa” at the iPIC Exhibition Hall. The seminar featured Prof. Magnus Mfoafo M’Carthy of Wilfrid Laurier University, Ontario, Canada, who shared valuable insights on the importance of research that addresses Africa’s development priorities and fosters multidisciplinary collaboration. The session encouraged postgraduate students and researchers to pursue impactful, solution-oriented research that contributes to sustainable development across the continent. The event was graced by the DVC RPE, Prof. Jackson Kwanza. The seminar, as moderated by Prof. Kaluli, had insightful discussions...
