School of Pharmacy First Year 2022 Student Orientation

The orientation of students joining JKUAT University is done mostly at college level in order for the new students to familiarize with facilities in their different colleges and the university at large.

School of Pharmacy, under the College of Health Sciences led by the Dean Dr. Alex Kigundu Muriithi held an orientation meeting for first year students on 7th September, 2022 at the College of Health Science building. The school received 60 Students during the 2022/2023 academic year and they were given a warm welcome.

Dr. Muriithi addressed very crucial matters to the new students, which included;

  1. Acquainting them with the University rules and regulations.
  2. Informing them on the different types of exams done in the school of pharmacy including the main examination, supplementary examination and special examination
  3. Encouraging them to adjust to the new life at the University
  4. Introducing them to the members of staff in the school of pharmacy.
  5. Making them aware of the facilities and amenities available in the University, which include but not limited to the library, laboratories and welfare facilities like the JKUAT hospital, counselling and sports.

The Dean pointed out that the students should follow all the rules of the school and the university in order to remain focused in their studies despite all the freedom they have in the institution. He encouraged the students to fully attend their classes, work hard and evade examination malpractices whose penalties may lead to cancellation of examinations, suspension or expulsion from the university.

In his final remarks, Dr. Muriithi assured the new students that their dedication will bear good fruits at the end of the training if they have a positive attitude since those who were there before them have made it.

They were also addressed by the acting Chairperson Department of Pharmaceutics Dr. Isaac Kimani, Chairperson Department of Pharmaceutical chemistry Dr. Boniface Thuo and technical members of staff Ms Mercy Musanga and Ms Eunice Aduor who emphasized on the need for the students to ensure they have laboratory coats and to attend practical sessions in the various laboratories.  What stood out in their speech was that the students should be ready to be transformed to become doctors, by carefully defining their academic  trajectory which will lead them to graduate after their five years of study in the school of pharmacy.

A team from JKUAT Pharmacy Student Association(JPSA) were also present to welcome the new students in to the  institution. Those present were ; Lynn Waruimbo (JPSA vice chair), Chelsea Adika (School representative), Elizabeth Kangethe (JPSA Organizing Secretary), Edwin Muriithi (JPSA Undersecretary) and James Matedi (JPSA Treasurer).
