After a four-year tenure, Dr. Alex Kigundu Muriithi has been re-elected as Dean of the School of Pharmacy for the next two years.

The 18-member faculty from the School’s three departments made the decision to extend his term, given that all eligible candidates for the position are currently enrolled in various post-doctoral research programs in pharmaceutical sciences.

During the declaration on Thursday March 25, 2022, the Returning Officer, Dr. Esther Muoria, who is also the Registrar Academics, lauded Dr. Kigundu for his outstanding leadership and mentorship since the inception of the school.

In his congratulatory remarks, Dr Linus Wafula, Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy, stated that the faculty had endorsed Dr. Kigundu due to his diligent performance, citing the increase in staff numbers at the school during his tenure.

Addressing the faculty during the function, Dr. Kigundu thanked his colleagues for their confidence in endorsing his candidature, and allowing him to lead the school, a feat he is appreciative of.Dr. Kigundu’s deanship since 2018, was preceded by a three-year term as the first Chairperson of the school’s Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics department.

Dr. Kigundu has been committed to developing collaborative ventures with local and international partners, allowing students to interact with other pharmaceutical professionals and practitioners. Furthermore, he has ensured that the School provides fruitful mentorship and pastoral support to students in order for them to achieve their academic objectives.

Through the mentorship, two final-year Bachelor of Pharmacy students Joy Mchungaji and Veronica Njambi were selected by Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) to present their outstanding final-year projects at the 40^th Annual PSK Scientific Conference held virtually in October, 2020.

In addition, the School secured a consignment of 300 copies of the highly sought-after drug index book from Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). The trendsetting publication, recommended by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), is an invaluable resource in the health sector, and aims to ensure a smooth transition of students into the job market.

Dr. Kigundu is a Senior lecturer at the School of Pharmacy. He holds a Doctorate and a Master’s degree from Volgograd State Medical University, Russia.
