Message from the Dean – School of Nursing
I am delighted and thrilled to welcome you to the School of Nursing at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKAUT). The School of Nursing is domiciled in the College of Health Sciences (CoHES) at the main campus in Juja. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing was started as one of the programmes in the Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases (ITROMID) in 2011. Later in September 2014, two departments, namely General Nursing and Community Health and Research in Nursing, were established. The School was fully established in April 2015 with four departments: General Nursing (GN), Midwifery and Reproductive Health Nursing (MRHN), Community Health Nursing (CHN), and Nursing Education, Leadership, Management, and Research (NELMR). Our programs have expanded to include Master of Science in Nursing and PhD in Nursing, with several specializations in Medical-Surgical Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Oncology Nursing, Midwifery & Reproductive Health Nursing, Nursing Education, and Community Health Nursing. Our programs are benchmarked with those of other Universities and nursing bodies globally. All our programs are accredited by both the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and the Commission for University Education (CUE).
As a school, we are committed to ensuring quality training, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in order to produce competent nurses and leaders in different fields of nursing to meet the ever-changing and expanding needs of the society. Our faculty comprises highly skilled, competent, and advanced practice nurses, who are highly trained to provide classroom, clinical, and community experiences that is required of nursing graduates. Our graduates are trained to uphold professionalism and provide evidence-based nursing care as well as nursing leadership, research, and education. The school provides holistic ethical education to students to acquire intellectual knowledge and skills with the right attitudes and competencies relevant to meet the dynamic health care needs of the Kenyan and global community. Innovative teaching and learning modalities are utilized to enhance the integration of theory into practice. The school has a state-of-the-art nursing skills laboratory for simulation and hands-on nursing skills.
The graduates are mentored to effectively contribute to the achievement of improved quality of health to the highest standards as envisioned in our Kenyan Constitution 2010, Vision 2030, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and will further contribute to the promotion of sustainable health benefits and development of the nursing and health system management professions. We are very proud of our graduates who have already found a footing in the ever-changing health care job market and are providing innovative solutions to the health problems in our population. Our alumni are impacting healthcare delivery across the country and globally. We are proud to inform you that we are among the universities recognized globally for supplying among the best nurses into the job market, meeting an essential part of the human resource for the health sector’s needs.
