Media and Communication students getting accredited by Media Council of Kenya

Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) and Media Council of Kenya (MCK) on Friday, July 8 2022 completed their bi-annual Accreditation exercise of staff and students from the Department of Media Technology and Applied Communication (MTAC) at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

Speaking during the accreditation exercise, the Research and Documentation Assistant of MCK, Ms. Clarice Atieno expounded on the illimitable benefits of registration stating that accreditation identifies an individual as belonging to the journalism profession and authorizes them to practice accordingly.

“The association helps protect and advocate for journalist’s freedom, adjudication which means settlement of media disputes, monitors the quality of content produced and circulated via media channels,” she said. “It also plays a role of being an advisory body and accreditation which is the process of officially recognizing someone as being qualified to conduct journalistic activities,” she added.

Amos Kariuki, an official from PRSK gave a brief background of the association and its role. He further said that the organization aids students in getting attachments and internships, organizes boot camps where university students get an opportunity to compete, pairs students with mentors and makes sure that only those qualified practice PR.

On her part, the MTAC Head of Department, Ms. Lillian Mwangi urged the students to participate in the registration process as it would provide them with opportunities and also enable them to access information as aspiring journalists.
