Boosting Potato Production in Nyandarua: Africa-ai-Japan Project (JICA) and JKUAT Lead the Way

The Africa-ai-Japan Project (JICA), in partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Fujita Corporation (Tokyo, Japan), is excited to announce remarkable progress in boosting potato production in Nyandarua County. For the past two years, our teams have focused on innovating the potato value chain to empower local farmers, increase yields, and ensure food security for Kenyan communities.

As the long rains arrived in May, our team kicked off the third phase of the Potato Value Chain Project in the Nyandarua County region, working together with dedicated farmers across 10 different fields. This unique partnership model allows us to compare traditional farming practices with our advanced methods in the same field. The farmers manage half of each field, while the other half receives our special treatment, including improved soil and chemical management, the use of certified seeds, and best farming practices.

The results speak for themselves: The past two trials have shown that proper management methods can significantly increase potato yields. Our approach also includes innovative flooding control techniques, preventing water stagnation and protecting crops from damage.

In addition to our trial fields, we operate a three-and-a-half-acre seed production plot, where we grow high-quality certified potato seeds. These are distributed to local farmers across Nyandarua County, giving them the tools they need to grow healthier, more productive crops.

Potato production in Kenya has faced serious challenges, especially from nematodes and soil-borne diseases. Our research shows that, with the right approach, these challenges can be overcome. The Potato Value Chain Project is not only increasing yields but also helping to create jobs, reduce hunger, and improve health and nutrition in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We are inspired by the dedication of Nyandarua’s farmers and the positive impact our project is making. The success so far proves that innovation and collaboration can transform Kenyan agriculture. As we continue our journey, we invite more partners and stakeholders to join us in making a difference.
