Sherry Oluchina, an Associate Professor at the College of Health Sciences (COHES) has been elected the new Dean, School of Nursing for the next two years. Oluchina was unanimously supported by the faculty as the sole candidate during the elections held Thursday, May 29, 2025.
Previously she served as the Chairperson Department of Nursing Education, Leadership and Management and Research (NELMR) from 2017 to 2021.
In her acceptance speech, Prof. Oluchina expressed heartfelt gratitude to her colleagues for their support and shared her excitement about the journey ahead.
“I would like to take a moment to sincerely acknowledge and thank my predecessors Dr Albanus Mutisya, Prof. Drusilla Makworo and the late Prof. Peter Mwaniki for their outstanding leadership and service. We are all beneficiaries of their hard work and I thank them for laying a strong foundation upon which we will continue to build.” Professor Oluchina stated.
Dr. Mutisya, the outgoing Dean, expressed his appreciation to the staff for their support during his tenure. His four years in office he said, were seamless because of the tremendous support he received from both teaching and administrative staff.
Prof. Oluchina is deeply passionate about the fields she has pursued throughout her academic journey. She holds two PhDs: one in Community Health from Great Lakes University of Kenya and another in Paediatrics and Child Health from JKUAT. These achievements were preceded by a Master’s degree in Paediatrics and Child Health from the University of Nairobi, and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Baraton University, Kenya.
Her vision for the school is rooted in collaboration, innovation and continuous growth. She believes that through team work they can promote academic excellence and impactful research that addresses real-world health challenges.
Additionally, she Prof. Oluchina is keen on strengthening both internal collaborations and external partnerships to ensure that JKUAT remains as the leaders in Nursing education and service.
