Vice Chancellor Prof. Mabel Imbuga is the new Chairperson of the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM). Prof. Imbuga, appointed during the 11th Annual General Meeting of RUFORUM held in Windhoek, Namibia on August 27th-29th, becomes the first female board chair.
RUFORUM, established by ten Vice Chancellors in 2004, is a consortium of 46 African universities operating within 22 countries across the African continent.
RUFORUM oversees graduate training and networks of specialization in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). It also supports universities to address the important and largely unfulfilled role that universities play in contributing to the well‐being of small‐scale farmers and economic development of countries throughout the sub‐ Sahara African region.
Speaking during the AGM, the newly elected Chairperson of RUFORUM, Prof. Mabel Imbuga says, there is need for high and functional partners and more research should be conducted to establish how best to make use of the available natural resources to grow more food to guarantee food security in Africa.
Prof Imbuga challenged members present to prioritize innovations in packaging of both agricultural commodities and knowledge acknowledging that poor packaging of both agricultural products and knowledge made it difficult for the target recipients to appreciate the value of agriculture.
