Prof. Kikuvi Elected Dean, School of Public Health

Prof. Gideon Kikuvi, an Associate Professor at the College of Health Sciences (COHES) has been elected the new Dean, School of Public Health for the next two years. Kikuvi was unanimously supported by the faculty as the sole candidate during the elections held Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

Prof. Kikuvi is an astute leader who played a major role in laying a strong foundation for COHES having served in various leadership capacities at the then Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases (ITROMID). He served as Deputy Director, ITROMID before serving as Acting Principal, COHES from 2013 to 2014.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Kikuvi appreciated his colleagues for turning up to support the transition as he takes over from his predecessor, Prof. Kenneth Ngure, adding that their support was vital.

 “All of us are cogs in a wheel that needs to keep turning in order to satisfy our clients, who are primarily students. We have various aspects to develop, and with all hands on deck, we shall be able to take our school forward,” Professor Kikuvi stated.

During the declaration of results, the Returning Officer, Ms. Lydia Kimundu, the acting Registrar Academic Affairs, commended the school for supporting Prof. Kikuvi, whose leadership record, she said was exemplary.

Prof. Ngure, the outgoing Dean, expressed gratitude to the staff for their support during his tenure. His eight years in various administrative positions, from Chairman to Dean, he said, were seamless because of the tremendous support he received from both teaching and administrative staff.

Prof. Kikuvi is a dynamic and versatile research scientist and lecturer with a key focus on Pharmaco-Epidemiology. He holds a PhD in Pharmacology, an MSc in Pharmacology and Toxicology, and a Bachelors degree in Veterinary Medicine, all from the University of Nairobi.

His student-centric mission includes exploring more partnerships with the industry especially at the County level so that undergraduate students can get more attachment placement opportunities. On the other hand, he intends to ensure that postgraduate students complete their research on time, and publish in high-impact journals.
