Prof. Karanja Appointed Chair of NACOSTI Committee

Simon Karanja, a Professor of Medical Epidemiology at the School of Public Health, JKUAT, has been appointed Chairperson of the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) Licensing, Monitoring and Evaluation of Research Committee.

The appointment by the NACOSTI Director General is in line with the STI Act Section 12(1), which stipulates that no person shall undertake scientific research in Kenya without obtaining a license under the Act. The committee is responsible for coordinating and managing the review of research proposals for licensing, as well as the surveillance, monitoring, and evaluation of ongoing or completed research projects.

Prof. Karanja, who is also the lead researcher of the Digital Health Applied Research Centre (DHARC) and the Principal Investigator of a number of FIND-funded projects within DHARC, said his committee will uphold the highest standards of excellence, professionalism, and integrity in carrying out its mandate.

“I recognize the critical role that science, technology, and innovation play in driving economic growth, social development, and environmental sustainability and pledge to work closely with all stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and the public, to ensure that our efforts are guided by the principles of fairness, transparency, and social responsibility,” said Prof. Karanja.

In her congratulatory message, JKUAT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, lauded the appointment as a testament to Prof. Karanja’s exemplary leadership and numerous contributions made to the public health sector through research.

In a letter dated April 5, 2023, the NACOSTI Director General, Prof. Walter Oyawa, urged the team to be steadfast in the furtherance of research, science, technology and innovation for national prosperity and public good.

Prof. Karanja holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Epidemiology from Free University of Berlin, Germany and a Master of Science in Tropical Epidemiology. He has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has also authored one book and two book chapters.
