Prof. John Gitonga Githiri has been appointed the new Dean of Students at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
He succeeds Prof. Fredah Wanzala, who recently completed her term as Dean of Students. His appointment is expected to further strengthen student welfare, leadership development, and service delivery across the University.
Prior to his appointment, Prof. Githiri served as the Deputy Dean of Students, where he spearheaded initiatives aimed at improving student welfare, strengthening mentorship programmes, and enhancing student engagement in university activities.
A distinguished educator, mentor, and administrator, Prof. Githiri has an impressive track record in student affairs management, higher education leadership, and youth empowerment. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Physics at JKUAT, with over 20 years of experience in teaching and research at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
To date, he has supervised 30 master’s theses and five PhD dissertations to completion, co-authored two Physics books, and published 47 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Over a career spanning more than 27 years, Prof. Githiri has held various academic and administrative positions, including Chairperson of the Department of Physics, where he oversaw staff, students, and departmental facilities.
Widely respected for his integrity, inclusivity, and service-oriented leadership, he has championed initiatives promoting student wellness, leadership development, career preparedness, and academic success.
Upon assuming office, Prof. Githiri reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive university environment where every student feels valued, heard, and empowered to achieve their full potential.
“Together, we will continue building a student-centered university that supports academic excellence, personal growth, and student success,” Prof. Githiri said.
Prof. Githiri will be deputized by Dr. Joyce Nzulwa, who brings a wealth of experience in student affairs, counselling, youth development, and institutional management.
Dr. Nzulwa holds a PhD in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Leadership and Governance. Throughout her career, she has been actively involved in students’ leadership training, clubs and societies, student mentorship, guidance, and welfare initiatives.
Prior to her appointment, she served as a Senior Lecturer at the JKUAT Nairobi CBD Campus, she also served as department chair commerce and economic studies as well as a Postgraduate Research Coordinator. In recognition of her contribution to student development and engagement, she was named a National Hero Awardee in 2025.
A certified HR practitioner, trained mediator, author, mentor, and leadership coach, Dr. Nzulwa is passionate about authentic leadership, teamwork, and promoting service founded on integrity and dignity.
Widely recognized for her approachable nature and commitment to student success, she has worked closely with student leaders, academic departments, and support units to foster a supportive learning environment.
She believes that student success extends beyond academic achievement to include personal growth, emotional well-being, leadership development, and community engagement.
