Professor Everisto Opondo has successfully retained his position as the Dean of the School of Medicine for another two- year term, following a decisive victory in a highly competitive election held on February 28, 2025.

The election, conducted through a secret ballot and overseen by the Registrar, Dr. Aggrey Wanyama, saw Prof. Opondo triumph over his closest competitor, securing 41 votes, while Dr. Mburugu garnered 22 votes.

In his acknowledgment speech, Prof. Opondo expressed sincere gratitude to his colleagues for their unwavering support, emphasizing the strong backing he received throughout his campaign. He reiterated his deep commitment to the School of Medicine and acknowledged the concerns raised within the institution.

Prof. Opondo stressed that collective effort and teamwork would be crucial in driving the school to even greater heights. He pledged to provide the necessary support to achieve this shared vision.

Reflecting on the progress made under his leadership, he highlighted significant milestones, including the streamlining of undergraduate programs, improved exam processing systems, faculty promotions, and the growth of postgraduate programs.

“I plan to focus on strengthening undergraduate programs to ensure they continue producing high-quality medical professionals. My goal is to position the School of Medicine so that its graduates are among the best in the country and the region,” said Prof. Opondo.

After the results were announced, Dr. Patrick Mburugu graciously congratulated Prof. Opondo on his victory, acknowledging the competitive nature of the election.

He remarked, “We live to fight another day,” a sentiment that reflected the professionalism and camaraderie within the school.
