PhD Construction Management
Minimum entry requirement:
Admission to the doctorate programme is done according to JKUAT statutes and procedure manual (Admission of Post-graduate Students). The University seeks to provide access to as wide a range of candidates as possible, subject to the essential principle that there is a reasonable expectation of candidates completing their programmes of study successfully within the normal expected duration of the course.
A candidate must satisfy any of the following minimum requirements:
- Be a holder of Masters Degree in Construction Project Management from JKUAT or its equivalent from recognized institution/ university.
- Be a holder of a relevant engineering or built environment master’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution /university
- In the case that a submitted degree certificate does not fulfill the condition of “equivalence” under item (i) or (ii), admission to the doctoral programme can be combined with an obligation to complete specific or additional courses. Their amount and contents is laid down by the senate in agreement with the coordinators of the doctoral programme.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate that they are capable of undertaking a sustained piece of research and producing a thesis.
Programme duration
Minimum Duration – A candidate registered for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall carry out a programme of original study or research over a minimum period of twenty four(24) months after the date of registration or after completion of any required course work and examination and shall submit a thesis based on study of the research done.
Provided that for part time the minimum period shall be thirty six (36) Months
Maximum Duration – No candidate for the degree of Philosophy shall be registered as a full time student for more than forty–eight (48) months or as a part-time student for more than seventy – two (72) months without submitting his thesis except by permission of senate.
Aims
The aims of the programme is to enable learners to develop:
- High level research skills and techniques, including the ability to critically review literature, manage a database, locate resources and other sources of information, and use information technology.
- Effective project management skills, including goal setting, prioritization, designing and executing data acquisition and collation, and effective time management;
- High level competencies as an ethical professional, with regard to ethics, copyright, data protection, malpractice and intellectual property rights;
- As a skilled communicator, able to construct, sustain and articulate an argument to a diverse audience;
- Personal effectiveness in acquiring new knowledge, creating an innovative approach to the study of a specific area, demonstrating initiative, flexibility, self reliance and independence;
- As an independent, lifelong learner in the field of construction project management.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:
- Design and execute a major project (for example research, intervention, development) demonstrating creative and original work, that is relevant and contributes to professional practice;
- Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academic inquiry in construction project management, and select appropriate methodologies for their study;
- Demonstrate, through an original piece of work, a critical, leading-edge knowledge and understanding at the forefront of the chosen specialism.
- Communicate at many different levels, for example through publication and transfer of knowledge and understanding in critical dialogue with peers.
- Demonstrate reflective, self-critical, flexible and ethical working practices, challenging current professional policies and practice;
- Initiate and be fully responsible for their own and/or others work.

The doctorate degree programme in Construction Management targets master’s degree holders in Construction Management or other relevant construction-related disciplines including:
Building construction professionals who wish to develop their management skills.

Researchers who wish to upgrade their research and analytical skills.

Tuition fees for the three (3) academic years: Kshs. 510,500/= (Five hundred and ten thousand, five hundred shillings only)
