Wycliff Omondi, a third-year student in the School of Pharmacy, College of Health Sciences, has been elected the chairperson of the Jomo Kenyatta University Students Association (JKUSA). He will be deputized by Wangari Ann Wanjiru, a third-year student in the School of Law. The duo emerged winners in the just concluded competitive student elections.
With a total of 64 votes, Omondi edged out his closest challenger, Olang’ Hilary Ben who got 32 votes. The results were formally declared on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 by the Chief Returning Officer for the JKUSA Electoral Commission, Prof. Fredah Wanzala.
Maureen Chepchirchir clinched the Academic Affairs Secretary post with 61 votes, trouncing her opponent, Michira Abel Nyaosi, who got 44votes. Nyang’ate Michelle Nyabonyi won one of the least contested posts, Health, Catering, and Accommodation Secretary by garnering 96 votes against her competitor, Ochieng Akinyi Audrey who got 50 votes.
The new Treasurer is Murithi Kageni Natasha who floored his opponent, Vincent Okiring Epale, garnering 67 votes against 42 votes respectively. Newly elected Secretary General is Isaac Ongoto, who bagged 57 votes. Okeyo Felix Omondi was declared the Sports and Entertainment Secretary after winning with a landslide of 80 votes.
Various JKUAT campuses also elected their student leaders. Karen Campus will now be headed by Mboya G. Osumba who will be deputized by Ng’eno B. Cheptoo, while Mombasa CBD Campus will be headed by William Nguta Wambua deputized by Hadassah Sydney Nawate. Nakuru CBD Campus will be led by Clinton Kiriama deputized by Maryann Wanjiru, while Nairobi CBD Campus will be headed by Stanley Shisutia Asembo, deputized by Joy Monica Akinyi.
The Council elections were a culmination of an electoral process that commenced with nominations, candidate verification, congress and delegate elections which ended on March 31, 2026.
After announcing the results, Prof. Wanzala congratulated all candidates and voters who participated in the election process, stating all parties played a critical role in ensuring that the entire process was successful.
“Thank you again to everyone who helped make our student elections successful. Your devotion and enthusiasm are a monument to the strength of our university community and I look forward to seeing the good impact of our collaborative efforts in the days ahead,” Prof. Wanzala said.
The elected officials are expected to take oath of office on April 27, 2026 at an inauguration ceremony conducted by Chief Legal Officer. Thereafter, the Congress, which is composed of the executive, student council of the main campus and council of satellite campuses, schools, halls and non-residential representatives, will hold its first sitting the same day and elect the speaker of the house.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming inauguration, the students’ community is optimistic that the elected leaders will deliver on their manifestos and strengthen student representation. The successful elections underscore the institution’s commitment to foster democratic values through students’ engagement.
