Five new academic programmes at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have been evaluated by Commission for University Education (CUE). The exercise aimed to ground compliance of the programmes with national quality standards and ensure they meet the required academic and infrastructural benchmarks.
The programmes evaluated include the Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology, Master of Medicine in Emergency Medicine, Master of Clinical Medicine (Oncology), and Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine, all offered in the College of Health Sciences (COHES) as well as the Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science from the College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC).
During the visit on Friday 30, January 2025, the CUE team led by the Deputy Commission Secretary, accreditation, Prof. Urbanus Mutwiwa, engaged with various stakeholders, including university management, faculty members, students, and support staff, to assess academic delivery, infrastructure, staffing capacity, and overall compliance with regulatory standards.
Prof. Mutwiwa emphasized the importance of the exercise, noting that the Commission is committed to ensuring all academic programmes offered in Kenya meet the required quality and accreditation benchmarks.
“The newly proposed programmes have been evaluated on curriculum design, staffing, facilities, and alignment with national higher education standards,” said Prof. Mutwiwa.
Citing the longstanding cooperation between JKUAT and the Commission, he commended the university for the willingness and commitment of its stakeholders to meet and uphold the high standards required for quality higher education.
Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Robert Kinyua who represented the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Ngumi said that the exercise is one the University takes very seriously, noting its critical role in maintaining academic excellence, programme credibility, and compliance with national accreditation requirements.
“Our programmes undergo rigorous quality assurance by the Commission to ascertain that they meet the required academic standards, industry relevance, and regulatory expectations,” Prof. Kinyua said.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor also underscored the importance of the exercise in strengthening the University’s commitment to quality education, noting that it plays a key role in producing highly skilled, competent, and industry-ready graduates for the job market.
Also in attendance were the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration and Finance), Prof. Bernard Ikua; the Principal of COHES, Dr. Reuben Thuo; University Librarian, Dr. Roselyne Mangira; and other key university officials and stakeholders.
