Microsoft inducts JKUAT Students on Technology Jobs

Microsoft Ecosystem Lead, Ruth Ferland, gives insights into the recruitment process

With the technological sector under constant revolution due to disruptions brought about by Covid-19 and other unprecedented external factors, the education sector has been forced to embrace a paradigm shift in curricula.

It is against this backdrop that Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Microsoft on October 4, 2022 conducted a career sensitization for staff and students in the School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT).

As part of their mission to nurture the next generation of Africa’s tech enthusiasts, a team of Microsoft technological experts and job recruiters visited the University to introduce students to their Africa Development Center (ADC) hubs, student programmes and Microsoft recruiting process.

Speaking during the forum, Microsoft Managing Director, Ms. Catherine Muraga urged students to embrace technology and follow their passion; explaining that tech recruiters look for clear enthusiasm for technology and strong ambassadors for their products. To be holistic technology expert, Ms. Muraga further urged the students to hone their soft skills.

“Take full advantage of your common units in the University to learn soft skills. Having the technological skills with poor verbal delivery will be disadvantageous in job interviews,” said Ms. Muraga.

She encouraged the students to create a strong presence in the social platforms such as Linked-In to improve their visibility to potential employers. She added that the physical résumés are a thing of the past in the technology world.

JKUAT is also working with players like Microsoft on curriculum reviews in bid to meet the industries demands.
