The Kenya Economics Students’ Association (KESA), an umbrella body for economics associations across the country, through its Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Economics Students’ Association (JKESA), held its 4th Annual KESA meeting on May 12, 2026 at the university’s Assembly Hall at Juja Main Campus.
Ms. Lilian Mark, a Lecturer in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship, College of Human Resource and Development who represented JKUAT during the summit thanked KESA for organizing the national event and the economics students for turning up in large numbers for the event.
She urged students to join KESA for internships programs, noting that through these internships, they have a chance to be exposed to many opportunities in various organizations.
Ms. Lilian further encouraged the students to register with KESA for the sake of their future professional careers and matters related to economics, not only in Kenya but also globally.
“We are glad for the collaboration which is really helping our students in their area of specialization. Based on the theme of the meeting: Reimagining innovative pathways for sustainable job creation and inclusive growth in the modern age, the future of labor and economic growth is being reshaped by innovation, technology and suitability, and as a result, the country’s development strategy must continue to prioritize the creation of sustainable jobs,” said Lilian.
During her introductory remarks, Ms. Spencer Muhonja, the President of KESA stated that the Association has reached over 33 institutions of higher learning and approximately 4000 members.
“Today, as we gather here to tackle a very important aspect of our lives as youth in Kenya, and as economists, it’s important to note that we contribute much to the economy of this country,” said, Muhonja.
“Platforms such as KESA have opened doors for students locally and internationally and this should encourage you to be bold and be updated in order for you to compete favorably when opportunities come along,” said Muhonja.
The Chairperson of JKESA, Amos Muchiri, stated that KESA is working together with various industries that support both economic expansion and environmental sustainability. He noted that inclusive growth is significant and evident over the past years and great improvements have been realized too.
Two panel sessions were held drawing panelists from industry partners and sponsors for the event. The panel discussions centred on economic matters and the increase in Kenya’s GDP in the recent years. The partners included; Absa bank, KASNEB and Safaricom.
Mr. Muchiri appreciated the economics students at JKUAT for their support that contributed to the successful annual meeting.
During the presentation of students’ projects that attracted 9 groups, one of the JKUAT teams lead by Amos Muchiri clinched the 2nd position, while another JKUAT team led by Isaac Njuguna emerged 3rd position.
The event was attended by students from Multi Media University, Kisii University, Mt Kenya University, Chuka University, Kabarak University, and Maseno University.
KESA was founded in 2019 by a group of economics students who felt the need to connect with their peers from other universities across the country. The association was officially registered in 2021 under the Societies Act.
