Kenya Deaf National Team Snap up JKUAT Coach

The Kenya Deaf Basketball Association has appointed Mary Chepkoi, a staff member at the University’s Sports and Games Department as their new women’s coach.

Following the timely appointment, Mary Chepkoi will be in the dugout for the upcoming 24th Deaflympics set to be staged at Caxias Do Sul, Brazil between May 1-15, 2022.

The highly rated coach has given the national team renewed hope after leading the JKUAT’s women’s basketball team (Lynx) through various accomplishments most notably, the recent promotion from Division 1 to the Premier League of the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) league.

Kenya will be aiming to improve her overall ranking in the women’s Deaflympics where they finished 8 in 2017.

While reacting to her appointment, an elated Mary said she is focused on making her spell as the national team coach a success.

She expressed her gratitude to the University stating that JKUAT has provided necessary support that enables staff and students to thrive in their respective sporting areas.

Upon releasing Mary to the Deaflympics, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi urged her on saying she has made the University proud.

While congratulating her, the Vice Chancellor further urged her to carry herself with utmost sportsmanship reminding her that her conduct is the mirror of the University’s values.

Prior to her trip to Brazil, Mary has been putting her new team to paces in a training camp which started April 1, 2022 at Kasarani training complex.
