
JKUAT Karen Campus organized a career talk aimed at inspiring the next generation of data science professionals. The event brought together industry experts and academic leaders to shed light on the exciting opportunities, challenges, and career pathways in data science on Friday, March 28, 2025.
The event served as a platform for students to interact with professionals and gain the knowledge and skills necessary for success in data science, was designed to prepare students for the professional world by providing them with requisite skills, industry knowledge, and career guidance, key factors that will help them navigate opportunities and challenges in this rapidly evolving field.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Colins Omondi, a data analyst at Safaricom, shared valuable insights into the evolving landscape of data science, emphasizing the essential skills and opportunities available in the field.
“This area is quickly becoming crucial for tech companies, driving innovation and shaping the future of digital transformation. I urge you to learn how to effectively utilize AI and the Internet of Things, as these technologies will be essential in shaping the future of the industry,” said Mr. Omondi.

He stressed the importance of staying competitive by continuously taking short online courses and acquiring new skills to adapt to the ever-changing trends in data science.
Mr. Omondi urged the students to volunteer with various companies to build competencies and gain experience both of which are crucial for securing employment or even starting their own businesses.
“Data scientists are in high demand, as their expertise is essential for organizations looking to leverage data for strategic decision-making and innovation. Employment opportunities are plentiful, offering a wide range of career paths for those with the right skills and knowledge,” observed Mr. Omondi.

The Chair of Applied Sciences and IT Department, Dr. James Mbao, said, the event offered a an opportunity to students to gain insights into the rapidly evolving field of data science and prepare for future career opportunities.
“It is imperative to provide students with the tools, knowledge, and practical experience necessary to succeed in an ever-changing technological landscape,” Dr. Mbao stated.
Maurice Ongili, a fourth-year Bachelor of Data Science and Analytics student, said the event imparted valuable practical knowledge that will be crucial as he embarks on his data science career.
“I have gained a lot in terms of practical skills and industry insights that will help me navigate the data science field and make a meaningful impact in my career,” said Ongili.
