
The School of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Materials Engineering (SOMMME) organized a Sports Day for staff and students to foster teamwork, health, and social bonding within the school community. The event, held on Friday, October 25, 2024, brought together participants for a range of engaging activities
The day was packed with various sporting and recreational events, each encouraging friendly competition and collaboration. Activities included football, board games, aerobics, marathon races, cycling, swimming and even a spirited food-eating competition, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy. The highlight of the event was the awards ceremony, where winners of various sports and activities were honored.
During the event, different departments within the school including Mechatronics, Mechanical, Marine and Mining Engineering actively participated, with each fielding representatives across various events.

Prof. Bernard Ikua, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration and finance lauded the event as a reflection of JKUATs values of community, resilience and teamwork. He expressed his admiration for the enthusiasm and dedication demonstrated by both students and staff in the competitions.
“To all the participants, your efforts today have strengthened the school’s bond and demonstrated the importance of balancing hard work with recreation. Congratulations to the winners, and thank you for contributing to the vibrant spirit of our university. Let us carry this energy back to our academic and professional pursuits, continuously striving for excellence together,’’ said Prof. Ikua.
Phillip Macharia, a fifth year, Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering student said that the event offered a valuable opportunity for interaction with fellow students from the school. He expressed his enjoyment in engaging with lecturers outside the usual professional environment describing the experience as refreshing and fun.
“It was a great opportunity to socialize with peers I hadn’t had the chance to connect with during academic hours. This event really enhanced our bond and teamwork, making it a memorable experience for everyone involved. It was so much fun!” said Mr. Macharia.
