Mr. Shadrack Asena, Chairman of the Department of Clinical Medicine at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya for the next three years.
In this role, he will contribute to the Council’s governance and strategic oversight, including policy formulation and review for the clinical officer profession.
His responsibilities will also encompass supporting the regulation of training, registration, licensing, and professional conduct of clinical officers; advising on standards for clinical medicine training and practice; strengthening collaboration between universities, healthcare facilities, and regulatory bodies; and advancing quality, ethical, and patient-centered healthcare services across the country.
Prior to joining academia at JKUAT, Mr. Asena served for eight years as a Clinical Officer, where he held leadership and oversight roles within academic and healthcare environments, including engagements with the Clinical Officers Council.
His experience spans strategic planning and governance, development and evaluation of professional and academic programmes, stakeholder engagement in healthcare training and service delivery, and ensuring compliance with professional and institutional standards, providing a strong foundation for his current appointment.
In a congratulatory message, JKUAT Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi lauded Mr. Asena’s appointment as a recognition of his many years of contribution to clinical medicine. She noted that the appointment further elevates the university’s profile as a key contributor to health sciences education and professional development in Kenya.
“Mr. Asena’s appointment provides an opportunity for JKUAT to contribute to policy discussions on clinical officers’ training standards, workforce development and evidence-based policies that strengthen healthcare delivery in Kenya,” she said.
Speaking after his inauguration to the Board by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Mr. Asena expressed his appreciation for the opportunity.
“I am deeply honoured and grateful to serve on the Board. This appointment represents both recognition of professional commitment and a responsibility to contribute to strengthening healthcare regulation in Kenya,” he said.
“I look forward to working collaboratively with fellow board members and stakeholders to support the development of the clinical officer profession and improve healthcare delivery nationwide.”
