Dr. John Kinyuru, a distinguished scholar from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, has been elected to the prestigious Fellowship of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS). The announcement was conveyed through an official letter dated November 21, 2025.

The election of Dr. Kinyuru affirms his significant contributions to agricultural research and scientific advancement in Kenya and beyond. According to the letter, his election to the AAS Fellowship “followed a rigorous evaluation by the AAS Membership Advisory Committee (MAC) in his various fields of specialization,” with the penultimate decision made by the Governing Council.

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) recognizes scientific excellence by selecting outstanding scholars who have attained the highest levels of achievement in their fields and have made significant contributions to the advancement of science both regionally and globally.

Dr. Kinyuru is a well-established and renowned researcher in the field of entomophagy, with a particular focus on crickets as an alternative and underutilized source of nutrition. His work has contributed to innovative approaches in sustainable food systems, highlighting the potential of insects in addressing food security and nutritional challenges.

He has also been involved in various research projects that have earned him recognition in the AD Scientific Index 2025, particularly in the areas of Food Science and Engineering.

Over the years, Dr. Kinyuru has held various leadership positions, including Director of Research at the Research, Production and Extension (RPE) and Assistant Director at the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD). These roles have allowed him to shape research agendas, mentor young scientists, and influence policy in agricultural development.

Reflecting on the honor, Dr. Kinyuru said, “this fellowship is not just an academic milestone; it represents hope and a reminder that African science matters. It gives me renewed energy to inspire young scientists and ensure our work continues to impact lives beyond laboratories and publications. I will wear the FAAS badge of honor with pride.”

As a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, Dr. Kinyuru will contribute to policy formulation, engage with governments, serve on various scientific working groups in line with the AAS strategic plan, and participate as a member of the General Assembly (GA), the highest decision-making body of the AAS, among other key responsibilities.
