Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has won the KENIA Commercialization Champions’ Award, for its innovations, driven by the Institution’s groundbreaking researches. The award presentation took place during the Research and Innovation Commercialization and Sustainability high level workshop on December 3, 2021. The event was preceded by the Kenya Innovation Week held between December 6-8 at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), Nairobi.
The University has been at the forefront in encouraging its staff and students to come up with innovations that provide viable and up to date solutions for the community and the country at large. Some of the recent innovations that have won many hearts and caught the government’s attention include; the weeding robot and the Automated Aquaponics Monitoring System, among others.
Speaking during an interview, the University’s director of Research, Dr. John Kinyuru said it was a huge delight for the University getting recognized for its efforts in supporting innovations. The award, he said, will challenge institutions, especially research-based, to commercialize their innovations.
“This award will be critical in ensuring JKUAT upscale her efforts in strengthening innovations infrastructure, agencies, as well as individuals, to provide viable innovative models for the market demands,” Dr. Kinyuru asserted.
He said institutions of higher learning were crucial innovation hubs, stressing that there was need to ensure they fostered collaborations with other institutions in order to come up with viable avenues that could fast-track the commercialization of the many innovations available.
