JKUAT Tree Seedlings’ Donation Boosts Green Initiative at Gitugi Girls’ School – Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) donated tree seedlings to Gitugi Girls’ Secondary School on June 7, 2025, in a move aimed at supporting the Government’s environmental sustainability agenda and climate-conscious education.

The initiative under the JKUAT environmental conservation efforts, seeks to enhance green spaces while empowering young women to become future eco-leaders.

The donation was part of various activities held during a charity walk organized by the Secondary School in Murang’a County, bringing together students, teachers, JKUAT representatives, and local environmentalists.

The donated tree seedlings — a mix of indigenous and fruit species—will serve dual purposes: restoring ecological balance by improving air quality and providing shade, while also acting as practical learning tools for agriculture and biology students.

JKUAT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Ngumi, who was represented by the Director of the Gender and Mentoring Centre, Dr. Moses Gichua, emphasised the university’s dedication to sustainable development and youth empowerment.

“JKUAT is committed to promoting holistic education. By engaging schools in greening initiatives, we are instilling environmental responsibility in the next generation. Through mentorship and gender-inclusive programs, we are investing in young women, empowering them to become tomorrow’s leaders,” Prof. Ngumi stated.

Gitugi Girls’ Principal, Ms. Esther Wamaru, highlighted the lasting impact of the initiative. “These tree seedlings represent growth, not only for our environment but also for our students, who will gain first-hand knowledge of conservation. We deeply appreciate JKUAT’s partnership with us in fostering environmental conservation,” she said.

Beyond the tree seedlings donation, JKUAT also provided sanitary towels to combat period poverty, a key factor contributing to school dropouts among girls. This effort aims to promote menstrual hygiene and eliminate unsanitary alternatives.

The partnership aligns with JKUAT’s ongoing sustainability programs, which include afforestation campaigns and renewable energy projects. The university intends to extend similar initiatives to other schools to reinforce its commitment to a greener and sustainable environment.
