JKUAT Students and Trainers in China

Three students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) delivered an outstanding performance at the Huawei ICT Competition global finals held in Shenzhen, China, from May 18 to 25, 2025.

Ephraim Shikanga, a 3rd-year BSc Computer Science student, led his team to a first-place victory in the Computing Track, outperforming top talent from over 170 countries.

Banzy Nyaga, a 3rd-year student pursuing BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science, earned a second prize in the Cloud Track, while Rukia Mwari Mohamed, a 4th-year BSc Telecommunication and Information Engineering student, also clinched a second prize in the Network Track.

The trio represented JKUAT with distinction, joining forces with students from other Kenyan universities to showcase the country’s growing influence in global tech innovation. Their journey was made possible through the Huawei ICT Academy, with mentorship from JKUAT faculty playing a key role in preparing them for the global stage. Their trainers are Phillip Oyier, Jonathan Mwai, and Wairimu Gichaiya.

Ephraim reflected on his remarkable achievement at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals, noting that winning first prize is a great accomplishment that demonstrates the power of cross-cultural collaboration and innovation.

“Winning first prize on the global stage in Shenzhen was exhilarating. It challenged me technically and connected me with brilliant minds from around the world. This victory is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation, and it leaves me inspired for the future,” said Ephraim

Rukia was elated with the performance. She said the experience was both humbling and eye-opening.

“Out of 62 participating countries, we really outdid ourselves even defeating top tech nations. The competition opened up a platform for us to network, skill up, and innovate. It was tough, and we honestly didn’t expect the results but we still made it to the podium,” said Rukia.

Banzy, energized by the international exposure, found the experience nothing short of life-changing.

“Going to China for the Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals was an amazing experience. It was both intense and exciting. The highlight for me was meeting people from so many different cultures. Interacting with participants from all over the world really broadened my perspective. It has made me even more motivated to grow in tech and pursue more international opportunities going forward,” said Banzy.
