Students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have recorded a strong performance at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China in June 2026, contributing to Kenya’s notable showing across multiple categories in one of the world’s largest university ICT competitions.

In the Cloud Track, Catherine Atieno, who a Fifth Year student studying Telecommunication and Information Engineering, was part of the team that secured the highest award in the category, following a rigorous technical assessment that tested advanced cloud architecture, systems deployment, and applied problem-solving skills.

In the Computing Track, JKUAT students Joan Kinoti, Faith Mosonik, and Melanie Minayo, all Computer Science students in Year 4.2, contributed to Kenya’s Second Prize finish after competing in high-level challenges in software engineering, algorithms, and systems design against leading global universities.

Kenya’s delegation also included students from Mount Kenya University, Tharaka University, and Machakos University, who participated across different tracks and contributed to the country’s overall performance at the global finals.

The Huawei ICT Competition attracts hundreds of thousands of participants annually and serves as a global platform for benchmarking ICT talent in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, networking, and computing systems.

JKUAT also received a Women in Tech recognition award, acknowledging the strong participation and performance of female students in the competition and highlighting the university’s commitment to inclusive ICT development.

Reacting to the achievement, JKUAT Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi stated that the performance reflects the depth of talent within our university and the effectiveness of our training model that blends academic learning with real-world industry challenges. She lauded the students noting that  they have demonstrated that they are ready to compete with the very best at the global stage.

Team trainer Wairimu Gichaiya praised the students for their commitment to the training.

“What we have seen is discipline, preparation, and execution. These students understood the standards required at this level and delivered with precision under pressure,” said Ms. Wairimu.
