Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has reaffirmed its commitment to community transformation by signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kiambu County Coordinated Stakeholders and Association (KCCSA) from Juja community, aimed at enhancing collaboration in capacity development, research, innovation, and community empowerment.
The partnership, officiated on Tuesday July 21, 2026 by the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Research, Production and Extension (RPE) Prof. Jackson and the Chairperson of KCCSA Ms. Jane Karanja, marks a significant milestone in strengthening the relationship between academia and local communities in pursuit of sustainable socio-economic development.
The agreement seeks to deepen the long-existing cooperation between JKUAT and the Juja community through jointly identified activities aimed at building the capacity of local stakeholders, promoting knowledge exchange, and leveraging research and innovation to address pressing community challenges.
The collaboration is also anchored on the aspirations of Kenya Vision 2030 and guided by the principles of the Constitution of Kenya, which emphasizes inclusive development, public participation, devolution, and equitable access to opportunities.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Prof. Kwanza underscored the university’s mandate to generate knowledge that directly benefits society, noting that institutions of higher learning have a critical role to play in driving national development beyond the classroom.
“This partnership reflects our unwavering commitment to ensuring that our research, innovations and expertise respond to the real needs of our communities. Universities are catalysts for transformation, and by working closely with local stakeholders, we can co-create practical solutions that improve livelihoods and stimulate economic growth,” noted Prof. Kwanza.
He further added that the collaboration would facilitate capacity-building programmes, community-based research, entrepreneurship development, technology transfer, agricultural extension services, environmental conservation initiatives, and skills development tailored to the needs of Juja community.
Commending JKUAT’s inclusive approach to development, Ms. Karanja hailed the partnership as a timely intervention. She noted that the collaboration is set to empower communities by driving knowledge sharing, innovation, and sustainable development initiatives.
“We are delighted to formalize this collaboration with JKUAT once more. Our community stands to benefit immensely from the expertise available within the institution. Together, we shall build the capacity of our people, nurture entrepreneurship, strengthen local institutions, and create opportunities that will uplift the socio-economic status of our residents,” Ms. Karanja said.
The MoU establishes a framework for implementing joint programmes focusing on education, agriculture, health, environmental sustainability, youth and women empowerment, enterprise development, governance, community outreach and scholarships to students.
It also provides opportunities for students and researchers to engage directly with communities through participatory research, internships, and extension services, ensuring that academic knowledge translates into tangible societal impact.
The partnership is expected to foster innovation-driven development by connecting university researchers with community stakeholders to co-design practical solutions that address local challenges while supporting county and national development priorities.
As Kenya continues to pursue the goals of Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), collaborations between universities and communities are increasingly being recognized as powerful drivers of inclusive growth, knowledge transfer, and sustainable development.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by key members of the university’s management team. Among the officials present to mark this milestone were Dr. Patrick Mbindyo (Registrar, Research, Production and Extension), Dr. Rebecca Maina (Director of Linkages), and Mr. Jeremiah Nyori (Director of Extension Services and Community Outreach.
