In an effort to bolster Kenya’s environmental conservation initiatives, Prof. Bernard Ikua, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration and Finance at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), led his division in a tree-planting exercise on March 28, 2025.

This initiative aligns with the government’s ambitious plan to plant 15 billion trees by 2032, aiming to increase the national tree cover from 12% to 30%.

During the event, Prof. Ikua emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in environmental stewardship. He highlighted that each staff member is encouraged to plant a significant number of trees, contributing directly to the national target.

“This exercise does not only benefit the current staff and students, but also future generations. By planting trees today, we are ensuring a greener, healthier environment for those who will come after us,” said Prof. Ikua.

He further noted that JKUAT efforts complement the broader national reforestation strategy, which encourages institutions, businesses, and individuals to take an active role in tree planting.

“This approach reinforces the government’s vision of achieving nationwide sustainability through shared responsibility. By integrating tree planting into our university culture, we are playing our part in securing a better future for all,” said Prof. Ikua.

JKUAT Estates Manager, Evans Kibiro said, the exercise had successfully planted over 500 trees across the campus, marking a significant step in the university’s long-term commitment to environmental conservation.

“We are proud of the progress we have made today, and we remain dedicated to maintaining and expanding green spaces within the university,” said Kibiro.
