Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) delivered a five-star performance at the 14th edition of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Women’s Championship, securing 8 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
JKUAT clinched gold in Badminton, Chess, and Karate, while the Rollball and Handball teams fought hard to secure silver. The university also claimed bronze in Basketball, Tennis, and Table Tennis. Hockey and Volleyball narrowly missed out on podium finishes despite showcasing an immense fighting spirit.
In a battle of wits, the ever-dominant chess team extended their purple patch, effortlessly outclassing their opponents to grab yet another gold, fresh off their East African Games triumph with another easy gold.
The sports fest that took place between March 7-9, 2025 at Meru University, brought together 29 universities from across the country with JKUAT once again proving its mettle in the grand stage.
The National Championships embraced the theme: Accelerating Health and Talent for University Women Through Sports.
JKUAT Director of Sports, Dr. Waweru Kamaku, who was present in Meru to cheer on the teams, was ecstatic about JKUAT’s performance.
“This was a stellar performance from our teams. The commitment, discipline, and hunger for victory were evident in every game, and I couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved,” said Dr. Kamaku.
Dr. Kamaku stated that the university’s success in sports was no surprise but rather the result of a well-crafted foundation built on a harmonious blend of academic excellence and athletic development.
Badminton Captain, Fridah Christine Mbuya was delighted for guiding her team of four to victory.
“Winning the gold medal for our badminton team feels absolutely incredible. We are beyond delighted, knowing that all our hard work, dedication, and countless hours of training have finally paid off,” said Ms. Mbuya.
For her, the victory gives much more satisfaction after losing the title in the previous edition of KUSF and reclaiming it back.
“After losing the title a year ago, reclaiming the gold is even more special. This victory means so much to us, and we are truly grateful to God for guiding us through this journey. A huge thank you to our amazing coach, Samuel Mitambo, whose support and guidance have been instrumental in our success,” added Ms. Mbuya.
