
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Leoben (Montanuniversität Leoben) in Austria, in a strategic move aimed at further enhancing institutional global research footprint and provide world-class opportunities for its students.
This collaboration, spearheaded by the Department of Mining, Materials, and Petroleum Engineering (MMPE), marks the beginning of a transformative era for mining engineering education at JKUAT.
By aligning with one of the world’s most prestigious institutions for mining and materials science, JKUAT is positioning itself at the forefront of the global energy transition.
The MoU is built on two critical pillars designed to elevate the academic and professional standards of both institutions: First, student and Faculty Mobility: A key component of this agreement is the exchange of human capital. JKUAT and the University of Leoben are committed to student exchanges and faculty development.
Secondly, joint research opportunities: The partnership opens doors for collaborative research in critical areas such as Circular Engineering, Sustainable Mining, and Green Energy. By pooling resources and expertise, researchers from the MMPE Department and the University of Leoben will work together to conduct research on geo-energy and circular engineering.
Already, the collaboration is delivering tangible results. The MMPE department is delighted to announce that one of its exceptional graduate students Ms. Rahma Ali Boa has been selected to pursue a Master’s degree in Energy Resources Engineering at the University of Leoben, Chairman of the MMPE Department, Dr. David Mwangi, revealed.
Her journey to Austria “represents the first of many anticipated exchanges that will see JKUAT-trained engineers tackling global energy challenges on the international stage.”
As the global demand for sustainable energy and efficient mineral extraction grows, JKUAT remains committed to equipping its students with international exposure.
Dr. Mwangi further noted that the partnership is a cornerstone of the university’s mission to produce industry-ready engineers capable of solving evolving challenges in the minerals and geo-energy sectors.
