Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) actively participated in this year’s Mining Investment Conference & Expo (MICE2026), reaffirming institutional commitment to advance innovation, research, and sustainable development within Kenya’s rapidly growing mining sector.

Held as a premier gathering of industry leaders, policymakers, researchers and investors at the Argyle Grand Hotel from 28th to 29th April, 2026, the conference provided a strategic platform for dialogue and collaboration on the future of mining in Kenya and across Africa.

JKUAT was represented by faculty and students from the Department of Mining, Materials and Petroleum Engineering (MMPE) and used the platform to showcase its cutting-edge academic programs as well as attracting prospective strategic partners.

Besides JKUAT’s participation highlighting its increasing role as a key academic and research institution supporting the transformation of the extractive industry, the   conference also reinforced JKUAT’s strategic vision of bridging the gap between academia and industry.

Through engagement with government representatives, mining companies, and investors, the university explored opportunities for collaborative research, training, and industrial capacity building.

Such partnerships are essential in addressing key challenges facing the mining sector, including sustainability, value addition, regulatory compliance, and community engagement.

By highlighting opportunities in mining and mineral processing engineering and related disciplines, JKUAT emphasized its role in training the next generation of professionals who will drive the sector forward.

Eight (8) JKUAT students and three (3) lecturers who attended the conference gained valuable exposure to industry trends, emerging technologies, and policies that affects the mining industry.

The JKUAT team was also tasked to spearhead the Academia masterclass session of the conference that was themed: “Bridging the link between academia and the industry.”

The Chairman of the Department of Mining, Dr. David Akisa noted that “JKUAT’s presence at the Mining Investment Conference & Expo 2026 underscores its growing influence in Kenya’s mining landscape. By leveraging research, innovation, and partnerships, the university is positioning itself as a leader in shaping a sustainable and economically viable mining sector.”

As Kenya continues to unlock its mineral potential, JKUAT remains committed to providing the knowledge, skills, and solutions needed to support this transformation.
