Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Ol Pejeta Conservancy are exploring opportunities to expand their partnership through collaboration in research, training, innovation and other areas of shared interest.
The two institutions have an existing strategic partnership, signed on February 18, 2026, aimed at enhancing teaching, learning, research, innovation and global outreach in conservation, environmental science and sustainable development.
As part of the efforts to deepen the collaboration, Ol Pejeta is seeking to leverage JKUAT’s expertise in drone technology to strengthen its plant repository through mapping, as well as enhance ectoparasite management through research and innovative approaches.
The proposed areas of collaboration will provide opportunities for joint research, knowledge exchange and the application of scientific expertise to address conservation and environmental management challenges.
The collaboration will support the Conservancy’s efforts to better understand its ecological landscape, strengthen biodiversity monitoring and improve the management of plant and animal resources through technology-driven approaches.
This was revealed when Ol Pejeta’s Chief Programs Officer, Prof. Geoffrey Wahungu, paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Ngumi, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Prof. Wahungu emphasised the importance of the plant repository in protecting endangered species, noting that proper mapping and documentation of plant resources will strengthen conservation efforts at the Conservancy.
“JKUAT’s expertise in drone technology and other research areas will be crucial in supporting Ol Pejeta’s efforts in mapping, monitoring and managing its natural resources,” said Prof. Wahungu.
He also lauded the existing partnership between JKUAT and VIVES University of Applied Sciences, stating that it has created opportunities for students to visit the Conservancy, undertake research and gain practical experience while contributing to conservation initiatives.
The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration and Finance, Prof. Bernard Ikua, said the University is well equipped to support Ol Pejeta Conservancy through its expertise in research, technology and innovation.
He noted that JKUAT’s multidisciplinary capacity provides a strong foundation for collaborative initiatives in areas such as drone technology, environmental monitoring, biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management.
Prof. Ikua reaffirmed the University’s commitment to strengthening partnerships that provide students and researchers with opportunities to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges while contributing to sustainable development and conservation efforts.
The two institutions will continue engaging in discussions aimed at exploring new opportunities that will strengthen their current collaboration in research, innovation, student training and capacity building.
