Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) management has undergone training on asset management aimed at enhancing efficiency, accountability, and the prudent utilization of institutional resources.
Asset management plays a critical role in the efficient functioning of institutions, particularly in higher learning institutions, where effective stewardship of resources is essential for sustainability and optimal service delivery.
The training, held at the Sino Africa Joint Research Centre (SAJOREC) on March 4, 2026, was aimed at equipping the University’s Asset Management Committee on government directives and available opportunities through which JKUAT could expand its financial base and optimize resource utilization.
It also sought to strengthen the management’s capacity to ensure compliance, enhance asset tracking, and promote best practices in the management and utilization of institutional resources.
Speaking during the training, Mr. Daniel Mutua, Senior Deputy Assets Management Officer at the National Treasury, underscored the critical role of the committee in enabling effective asset management, accountability, and compliance with government regulations.
“It is imperative that this committee executes its mandate effectively to support the University in achieving prudent asset management, enhancing accountability, and ensuring compliance with established government frameworks,” Mr. Mutua noted.

He further emphasized that government requires public institutions to constitute asset committees to ensure proper oversight, effective management and accountability in the utilization of public resources.
The Senior Assets Officer stressed the importance of creating a policy and guidelines that will guide the Assets Committee in advising University management on the acquisition, management, and disposal of institutional assets, ensuring consistency, transparency, and accountability across all operations.
While acknowledging the critical role of committee in mitigating risks, he noted that it also helps safeguard the institution against financial loss, mismanagement, and inefficiencies in resource utilization.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Administration and Finance, Prof. Bernard Ikua, noted that the University is committed to, and in the process of establishing a comprehensive asset management policy to guide the acquisition, utilization, and disposal of its resources.
“At JKUAT, we are focused on effective asset management through this committee, which will inform critical decision-making in acquiring, decommissioning, and optimizing the use of institutional assets,” Prof. Ikua stated.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor who also serves as the Chair of the Committee, added that the training was highly informative and helped in shedding light on grey areas, thus enhancing the committee’s understanding of asset management best practices and compliance requirements.
The Asset Management Ccommittee established in line with government directives, is instrumental in ensuring oversight, promoting accountability and guiding strategic decision-making in the acquisition, management, and disposal of institutional assets.
