“Education is the most essential tool to change society and leave a legacy.” These thought-provoking words were shared by Dr. Fridah Simba, Director of JKUAT TVET. She challenged the students to think beyond merely earning a degree and reflect on the impact they hope to make in the world.

Dr. Simba shared these words during a forum held on February 21st, 2025, at JKUAT Karen Campus, aimed at mentoring and educating students about their academic journey. The event was designed to guide prospective first-year students, equipping them with valuable insights into the various courses offered at the university.

Representing Prof. Hellen Mberia, Principal of JKUAT Karen Campus, Dr. Simba congratulated the students who had recently sat for their KCSE exams and commended the parents who attended, eager to understand their children’s academic prospects. She highlighted the uniqueness of JKUAT Karen Campus, noting that it is the only campus offering programs in Data Science, a TVET Institute, and a Law School.

Dr. Simba encouraged students to choose courses aligned with their passions and to start developing an interest in their chosen professions early. She emphasized that TVET provides opportunities for all students, focusing on practical training alongside theoretical learning.

“At JKUAT TVET Institute, we train, not just teach. Students leave with hands-on experience in their fields of study,” she stated.

Dr. Anthony Kirimi, Director, Academic Affairs at Karen Campus, stressed the importance of career guidance in helping students make informed decisions about their academic and professional paths.

“This forum is designed to provide clarity and direction as you embark on your higher education journey. At JKUAT, we believe that education is more than just acquiring a certificate; it is about developing skills, fostering innovation, and nurturing critical thinking that will shape your future and enable you to contribute meaningfully to society,” stated Dr. Kirimi.

Dr. Stephen Aminga, Dean of the School of Law, emphasized the interdependence of various academic disciplines, highlighting the importance of all courses. He stressed the vital role that law plays in maintaining order and justice in society, noting that legal professionals are key in upholding justice.

He noted that JKUAT is the second public university in Kenya offering both Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Law, with a distinguished faculty of 11 PHD holders.

Kirimi Kerry, a prospective student, described the event as insightful, sharing that it helped her understand the importance of being open-minded when choosing a course.

“Every course matter, and one can always learn from different fields. It’s essential to weigh all options before making a decision,” she said.

She also emphasized that academic performance should not discourage students, as determination and perseverance are what truly define success.
