Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is hosting a week-long capacity building workshop on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) Modular Curriculum for University Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions at its Karen Campus.
The CBET approach is designed to align training with national development priorities, labor market demands, and global competitiveness, ensuring that learners graduate with industry-relevant skills.
The workshop, attended by over 50 TVET Institute heads from across the country, marked a significant step in strengthening the capacity of university-based TVET institutions to effectively implement the modular CBET curriculum.
By equipping trainers and administrators with the necessary knowledge, tools, and strategies, the program aims to enhance the quality, relevance, and impact of technical and vocational education in Kenya.
Organized by the State Department for TVET under the Ministry of Education, the training runs from September 16 – 19, 2025. Participants will engage in practical sessions, collaborative discussions, and knowledge-sharing forums designed to build a shared understanding of CBET delivery models and their application in diverse training contexts.
While officially opening the workshop, Principal Secretary, State Department for TVET, Dr. Esther Mworia, described the event as both deliberate and transformative, noting that it is designed to equip University TVETs with the skills, tools, and mindset required to deliver the CBET modular curriculum effectively.
Dr. Mworia said the training represents a critical step toward ensuring Kenya’s TVET institutions produce graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also work-ready and globally competitive.
“It is important that we develop diverse competencies across different fields, and the CBET modular curriculum is designed precisely with this in mind. By breaking training into flexible, skill-based modules, the curriculum allows learners to acquire practical competencies that reflect industry standards while also promoting adaptability and lifelong learning,” Dr. Mworia stated.
The PS urged institutions to strengthen collaboration with industry to ensure curricula remain responsive to market needs and emerging trends.
JKUAT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Ngumi, said the workshop is vital in building the capacity of university TVET institutions to deliver the CBET modular curriculum effectively, thereby enhancing the quality and relevance of technical and vocational education in Kenya.
“The rollout of the CBET Modular Curriculum represents a fundamental and necessary paradigm shift in our educational philosophy. It moves us from a system historically focused on knowledge accumulation to one that is laser-focused on competency demonstration,” said Prof. Ngumi.
The Vice Chancellor further noted that with both universities and TVETs playing unique and critical roles, collaboration between the two is essential to ensure seamless delivery of the CBET curriculum, foster innovation, and produce graduates with industry-relevant skills.
Dr. Fridah Simba, Director, JKUAT TVET Institute, said the training aligns well with the University’s mandate as a Centre of Excellence in TVET, reinforcing its commitment to drive quality skills development and innovation in technical education.
The Director stated that the workshop is timely as it equips trainers with practical strategies to implement the CBET modular curriculum effectively, ensuring that TVET graduates are both industry-ready and globally competitive.
