Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in collaboration with the Deputy County Commissioner, Juja Sub – County security sector agencies, held a consultative meeting at the institution’s Juja main campus on Monday, June 22, 2026.
The meeting brought together business owners, hostel owners, elected university student representatives and staff union leaders, religious leaders and members of the Juja community, who shared views aimed at enhancing security situation in and around the university, as well as Juja subcounty and its environs.
In her welcome remarks, JKUAT Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi noted that she was delighted to welcome “key stakeholders who work closely with the university to ensure there is a secure and safe environment for our students, staff, and the Juja community at large.”
While conveying her heartfelt gratitude and deep appreciation of stakeholders for their “continued collaboration and support extended to JKUAT,” Prof Ngumi stated that one notable aspect of the stakeholder collaboration has been the “improved security situation in Juja, enhanced harmony, and peaceful co-existence in the community.”
She expressed optimism that the close partnership cultivated in recent years would continue to strengthen efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for students, staff, businesses, and the wider Juja Sub-County community.
Prof. Ngumi urged the security agencies to interact with students and offer them the assistance they may require, as a way to foster trust, mutual understanding and cooperation.
She also highlighted the efforts made by the university management to enhance good relations between JKUAT students and the security agencies, through trainings for all elected student leaders to induct them on matters of security and safety and the need for peaceful co-existence and interaction with the Juja sub-county security team as a way of developing good rapport and appreciation of the role played by the security agencies and how both sides can work together.
She called on the police to continue conducting both on-foot and mobile patrols across Juja, particularly in students’ residential areas to deter crime and enhance safety.
Juja Member of Parliament, Hon. George Koimburi appreciated the university management for inviting him to the meeting, and appreciated the JKUAT students for being peaceful. He noted that the security situation was of concern to all and appealed to the area security team to fight drugs and illicit alcohol in the area.
The legislator also called for the intervention of county government in eradicating all make-shift structures constructed around the university, as they posed insecurity and acted as places for criminal activities, such as drug and substance peddling. He also called upon the boda boda operators to ensure they were registered for ease of identification. He also announced an initiative spearheaded by Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation to ensure areas not covered by county lighting are well-lit.
The Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Daniel Ndege, highlighted a cross-cutting issue that had been raised in previous meetings and required the collaboration of all stakeholders represented at the forum.
The issues included landlords /tenants, lighting, illegal structures, alcohol and substance abuse, boda bodas, traffic jams at the Juja overpass, flooding, and access to JKUAT, among other areas.
Representatives from various security agencies attended the meeting, including the area OCPD, Mr. Isaac Kombo, Mr. Idris Shakel, and officers from the Traffic Department. The Juja Sub-County Ward Administrator, Mr. Mohammed Abdi, also addressed the gathering.
At the institutional level, the Director of Security Services at JKUAT, Mr. Samuel Kamande, acknowledged the strong working relationship between the university and the security agencies in ensuring that JKUAT and its environs remain safe and secure for students, staff, and the surrounding community.
Reinforcing this call for partnership, Deputy Vice Chancellors Prof. Robert Kinyua (Academic Affairs), Prof. Jackson Kwanza (Research, Production and Extension), and Prof. Daniel Sila (Administration and Finance) underscored the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in promoting sustainable security and safety.
